I started writing down a report for Rotary and realised like all members I’ve made a difference and had a blast doing so. You can give as much to this association or as little, below whilst it looks alot really was only a few hours a week over a four year period.
Sharyn McCaskey joined Rockingham Rotary in April 2016, in late 2019 I moved to Baldivis.
• I was the first in my social circle to join Rotary being invited by Alex Acton, I was made to feel very welcome.
Since then around 25 friends have joined varying clubs, Baldivis, Rockingham and Palm Beach, whilst in some cases they joined as a direct result of my spruiking how amazing being a member was, but when the next joined and the next it created a domino effect and more signed up. Everyone joined for their own reasons but when there are people you know already involved and are happy in a club, they tend to create new memberships. I am so proud to have started that thread. Did you know that 80% of all Rotary memberships come from someone you know.
• I regularly did shifts at the Rockingham Markets Sunday mornings, even if I had a heavy night prior.
• I worked at our Market BBQ’s.
• I grew the Rotary Markets Facebook page likers by over 400%.
• I shared consistent good news stories on our Clubs Facebook Page.
• I managed the Rotary Markets Facebook Page for a number of years.
• I created a marketing plan for the markets which included writing new policies and procedures and submitted them to the marketing committee.
• Working with Drone Camera Action and Russell Edmunds Photography who donated their services and fees, they took amazing footage of the Rockingham Markets from the ground and in the air, they then created a few professional video advertisements for us and all at no cost to our club.
• I pioneer the relationship with Rockingham Theatre Company, the RTC donated a percentage of ticket sales to our club from a number of their ticket sales, in one year we raised close to $1000 and had a great time doing so.
• I MC’ed annually our grants award winning ceremonies.
• I worked with a fellow member on the new program “Employer of the Year award”.
• I was an active member on the community committee for the duration of my time at the Rockingham Club.
• I hosted an exchange student for three months, this turned into 6-7 months.
• My best girlfriend Kathy, Neele our exchange student, who was awesome and I miss her and myself took a flight to NSW, a few days later a train to Canberra, then spent time on a working farm in Jindabyne, then up over Thredbo and we ended up in Victoria driving via the Ned Kelly Country, the Apostles and Sovereign Hill. When it was Neele’s birthday I suggested to the club we all put some money towards a trip rather than gifts, so the club helped support this trip for her. We made sure to wear our Rotary Shirts often whilst travelling which created great conversations whilst we were on holidays.
• The Palm Beach Club has a strong focus on telling the history of the Catalpa, being a previous employee of Fremantle Prison I knew that they had 15 professionally made story boards banners that could be used as a display. I secretly negotiated with the prison to donate them to Palm Beach Rotary Club and presented them one evening.
• When I supported the historical Author Peter Fitzsimmons with his book launch of the Catalpa, I made sure to include a lot of marketing and support to Palm Beach Rotary. Including displaying all those banners.
• I own a Social Media Marketing Agency, though this I actioned the Social Media Marketing for the first two years of the Palm Beach Club’s event “The Rockingham Beach Cup” and worked solely at cost, I later used that income to buy tickets for friends, family and business associates. It’s an awesome event with the first year hosting about 50,000 attendees.
• I was an active member of the 2020 9465 District Conference, my role was to support with the marketing.
I’ve attended regular weekly meetings, formed fellowships, had loads of laughs, got fined a lot, went out (and still do go out) socially with members of the Rockingham club, attended BBQs, German days, Hat days, Melbourne Cup days and have created many memories that will always make me smile. I’ve gone to the Four Way Test events, and wow those speakers are amazing.
In 2018 I was invited by District Governor Robyn Yates to take the role of PR and Marketing Chair for 9465. I was humbled and thrilled to be asked. I continued in the chair when Wayne Milnes became DG. Being on that board gives you an overview of what all the clubs achieve and the view from there is nothing short of spectacular, don’t ever underestimate the difference clubs and individuals make.
• I’ve reported monthly with actions that have been undertaken.
• I contacted my counterpart in 9455, Jess Karlson and formed an alliance, we removed many extra social media sites that had been created and later abandoned. We stopped using publicly the 9455/9465 codes and rebranded with Rotary In Western Australia.
• We helped create a YouTube Channel, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and a podcast, the goal was to bring in more people and share with them how awesome it was to be involved, we took advice from the World President who said “We needed to stop using acronyms and start to speak to the public without our internal jargon”.
• Working with 9455 counterpart Jess Karlson we formed a working party of professionals who now help with social media on a major scale.
• Together we’ve held a number of joint meetings.
• I attended numerous clubs and gave support and talks with their marketing for their clubs and events.
• I created a Facebook group that gave weekly tips to members on how to action your clubs marketing. Both on line and off line.
• I worked with Palm Beach Rotary Club in the support of their Saturday Markets and shared policies, application forms, procedures and marketing tips, these templated forms are available to all clubs.
• I’ve spoken at numerous events such as PETS and district meetings.
• I travelled to Tasmania and attended the conference.
• I’ve commenced and will continue to create Rotary Means Business Networking functions with a focus in our own region, Rockingham, Palm Beach, Baldivis area.
